Gabby is also an interesting update to the traditional characters associated with the original story. The new film uses familiar ideas from the classic book while creating a much larger narrative around the children.

The animation also allows the filmmakers to create situations that would be difficult to reproduce in a traditional live-action movie.
How Is This Movie Different From the Earlier Film?
Many viewers may remember the live-action The Cat in the Hat movie released in 2003.
The 2026 version takes a different approach.
The biggest difference is that the new film is an animated theatrical feature. Instead of using live-action performers to portray the world of the Cat, the new movie creates an entirely animated environment.
The story is also expanded considerably.
The original book is a relatively short children’s story involving the Cat’s visit to a house and the chaos that follows. The new movie creates a much larger adventure around the character.
Some major differences include:
- Animated presentation – The new movie is fully animated.
- A new mission – The Cat works for the I.I.I.I.
- New central characters – Gabby and Sebastian are at the center of the story.
- A larger fantasy world – The story expands beyond the original house setting.
- A broader supporting cast – Several new characters are introduced.
- A feature-length adventure – The movie develops a longer narrative around the famous character.
This makes the upcoming movie more of a new cinematic adventure inspired by the original story rather than a scene-by-scene recreation.
